Historic Musselburgh Links has been a venue for horseracing since 1816. Originally known as Edinburgh Races, with meetings held on Leith Sands, the move to the attractive 'meadows' setting at Musselburgh has proved a popular and lasting success, with the racecourse establishing itself as one of the most progressive in the UK. Facilities and the quality of racing have greatly improved in recent years and the size of the crowds are continually increasing.
The Links enjoys a traditional right to play golf and hosted the Open on a number of occasions before the turn of the century. Today, there is still a nine hole golf course inside the racecourse itself.
Highlights include the Scottish Sprint Cup on the first Saturday in June, the relaxed atmosphere of the three evening meetings on the Flat during summer, Scottish Racing Day on September 13 2004 and the New Year Powderhall Sprint fixture at Christmas featuring the richest amateur athletics race in the world and Musselburgh's richest jump races.
