Locally known as Gosforth Park, Newcastle Racecourse has undergone major improvements and refurbishment over recent years and has the feel of a course on the up-and-up. Newcastle stages both National Hunt and Flat racing and in recent years has revived a very famous meeting, the Blaydon Races, now staged in August every year. Highlights include the Fighting Fifth Hurdle and The Tote Northern National, a warm-up for the Grand National, the Foster's Lager Northumberland Plate at the end of June and Newcastle's most prestigious race of the year the Beeswing Ladies Day in late July. By Car: From the south, bypass Newcastle on the A1. The course is in High Gosforth Park, 3 miles north of the city centre. From the north, take the Junction signposted Wideopen. From the east, take the A19 and A1056. Then follow the Tourist Board brown signs bearing a horse and jockey. By Train: From London Kings Cross, take the Great North Eastern service to Newcastle Central. The station is four miles from the course, and just 15 minutes in a taxi. Newcastle's underground Metro runs to South Gosforth, Regent Centre and Four Lane Ends where free buses run to the course on racedays. By Air: Newcastle International Airport is only 10 minutes by car from Newcastle Racecourse. Helicopters are permitted to land at the racecourse by prior arrangement with the estate management.
