The Derby is open to both 3 year old colts and fillies. The distance is 1 mile 4 furlongs and 10 yards and is run the day after the Oaks at Epsom. The first Derby was run in 1780 and was won by Diomed owned by Sir Charles Bunbury. The race was named after the 12th Earl of Derby when he won the honour by the toss of a coin. Located on the beautiful Downs, Epsom Racecourse is a magical backdrop for inspirational performances and memorable occasions. Hosting a variety of race meetings from April through until October with a mixture of afternoon, evening, weekend and mid week fixtures including the ultimate flat race The Vodafone Derby on the First Saturday in June. |
