Wincanton Racecourse, situated in the heart of the Somerset countryside, provides a programme of National Hunt racing from October through until May. One of the highlights of the season is the Desert Orchid South Western Pattern Chase in late October. The famous grey in whose honour the race is named (now in retirement), usually comes along to lead the pre-race parade in front of the stands. Highlights of the Wincanton racing season include the Charity RaceDay in October, including a personal appearance by Desert Orchid, the Red Devils Parachute Display Team, free children's entertainment and creche, live music, a silent auction, a parade of champions and stallion parade. The Badger Beer Day in November, featuring the Badger Brewery chase, live music and a creche. The Boxing Day meeting, the most popular meeting of the year. Plus Ladies Day and Countryside Day in April. How to get to Wincanton:By Car: The Racecourse is off the B3081 between Wincanton and Bruton, which in turn is sign posted from the A303. Those travelling from the north, take the A37 until Shepton Mallet and then follow the A371 until Wincanton. From the South it is sign posted off the A357. By Train: The nearest station is Templecombe, which is four miles south of Wincanton. There is a raceday courtesy bus service that meets the train from Waterloo before racing and returns racegoers to the station after racing. Other stations located within 6 miles of Wincanton are Gillingham and Castle Cary. Disabled FacilitiesAccessible viewing is available in the Hatherleigh Stand.
